People Can't Value What They Don't Know Exists

Updated: 7 hours ago

What if the opportunities you're waiting for simply don't know how you can help?

Paulina Radgowska explores why visibility, not more capability, is often what stands between good work and the people who need it.

A friend asked me a question that stayed with me longer than I expected. "Do you actually give keynote speeches?"

We had known each other for years. She knew my values. She knew my work. She simply didn't know that speaking had become one of the most meaningful parts of my professional life.

People Cant Value What They Dont Know Exists cover

Clarity creates opportunity.

The conversation reminded me how often we assume people already understand what we do, especially those who have known us for a long time.

They remember who we were. They don't always know who we have become.

The cost of waiting to be discovered

Many professionals quietly wait to be discovered. They believe good work naturally speaks for itself. Sometimes it does. More often, people can only appreciate the value we make visible.

Visibility is often mistaken for self-promotion, perhaps because we have seen too much promotion and too little substance. Yet genuine visibility is something very different. It is helping people understand how your experience might serve them. It is telling the stories behind your work.

Sharing what you have learned.

Allowing others to connect the dots they could never connect on their own.

Clarity creates opportunity

Every time someone says, "I didn't know you did that," they are reminding you that clarity creates opportunity, not criticising your work.

This is true for organisations as much as individuals. Teams cannot contribute ideas they are never invited to share. Clients cannot ask for services they do not know exist. Colleagues cannot recommend expertise they have never seen.

Visibility is about becoming clearer, not louder.

The quiet responsibility of leadership

Sometimes one conversation changes everything, not because you suddenly became more capable, but because someone finally understood the value you had been carrying all along.

Perhaps that is one of the quiet responsibilities of leadership: helping the right people recognise the work you are already doing, when they need it most.

Calmclusion

Visibility is an act of generosity. That is Calmfidence in practice: the quiet clarity of letting your work be seen.

That clarity is not a marketing campaign. It is carried, in the stories you choose to tell, anchored in the middle of every ordinary conversation about what you do.

Where silence ends, opportunity begins.
