Yoga or Pilates for Bladder Control?

Both yoga and Pilates eased stress urinary incontinence in older women as effectively as standard pelvic floor training, with yoga showing a modest edge.

Pilates, Yoga, Women's Health

Stress urinary incontinence is a common, rarely discussed midlife concern, and this pilot trial compared yoga, Pilates and standard pelvic floor muscle training head to head in women aged 60 and over. All three groups showed significant improvement in incontinence symptoms after four weeks of supervised classes followed by eight weeks of home practice, with yoga showing a modest edge over Pilates on the primary symptom measure. Adherence was excellent throughout, and no adverse events were reported. As a small pilot study, the authors are clear this needs a larger, fully powered trial to confirm, but it's an encouraging early finding that either discipline, not just conventional pelvic floor therapy, may offer a genuine, low-risk option for this common issue.
