Work Addiction and Burnout Are Not the Same Thing

Testing nearly 600 managers, researchers found work addiction and burnout are related but genuinely separate states, not two names for the same problem.

Work Addiction, Depletion, Stress Management, Sustainable Performance, Burnout

This foundational study tested whether work addiction, burnout and work engagement, the sense of being positively absorbed in work, are really three different things or just different names for similar states. Surveying 587 telecom managers with validated questionnaires, the researchers found all three held up as distinct, correlated conditions, each with its own pattern of relationships to working hours, job demands, and health. Work addiction and burnout were both linked to poorer social functioning, while genuine engagement was not, suggesting the compulsive drive to work and the exhaustion of burnout share something troubling that healthy engagement does not. As a single-moment survey of one professional group, it establishes that these are separable states rather than proving how one leads to the other over time. For a woman trying to name what she is experiencing, it offers a useful distinction: feeling unable to stop working and feeling burned out by it are related but not identical, and knowing which one she is in shapes what actually helps.
