The Four Experiences That Actually Restore Your Energy

Genuine recovery rests on four distinct experiences: switching off, relaxing, mastering something, and having control over your time.

Energy Regeneration, Depletion, Sustainable Performance

Drawing on more than 900 participants, these researchers set out to define what genuine recovery from work involves and built a measure to assess it. They found recovery is made of four distinguishable experiences: psychologically switching off from work, relaxing, doing something that brings a sense of mastery such as learning a skill, and having control over how leisure time is spent. Psychological detachment, the ability to stop mentally turning work over, emerged as central, and later diary studies linked it to lower exhaustion. Because this is a measurement study, it maps the components of recovery; it does not prescribe a fixed dose of each. For a high-achieving woman whose mind keeps working long after the laptop closes, it names why a weekend spent half-thinking about Monday leaves her no more restored than when she began.
