Why Hormone Therapy Might Make Tirzepatide Work Even Better
In a Mayo Clinic study, postmenopausal women using hormone therapy alongside tirzepatide lost about 35% more weight than women on tirzepatide alone, though the study cannot prove hormone therapy caused the difference.
Women's Health
Mayo Clinic researchers set out to answer a question nobody had studied before: does menopausal hormone therapy change how well tirzepatide, a GLP-1-based obesity medication, actually works? They reviewed records of 120 postmenopausal women on tirzepatide for 12 or more months, comparing 40 who also used hormone therapy against 80 closely matched women who did not. The hormone therapy group lost 19.2% of their body weight on average, against 14.0% in the comparison group, a meaningful difference, alongside additional improvements in blood pressure, triglycerides and liver enzymes. The senior author was careful to note this was observational, not a randomised trial, so causation cannot be confirmed: women choosing hormone therapy may simply have been more health-engaged already, or symptom relief from hot flushes and poor sleep may have made it easier to stick with lifestyle changes. Several study authors disclosed industry ties, worth knowing when weighing the findings. A randomised trial is now planned to test this properly.
