Can Hypnosis Sharpen Performance?
A review of the sports research links hypnosis with better performance, faster injury recovery and less competitive distress, though the studies are mostly small.

This systematic review gathered the research on therapeutic hypnosis in athletes, asking whether it improves performance, aids recovery from injury and reduces the psychological strain of competing. Across thirteen studies, the pattern was consistently positive on all three counts, with the strongest hints in precision sports such as golf, basketball and soccer, where confidence and focus matter as much as physical skill. The mechanism proposed is familiar: hypnosis appears to strengthen self-belief and mental rehearsal, helping a trained body execute under pressure rather than tighten. The authors are refreshingly frank that most of these studies were small and uncontrolled, of only fair quality, so the field needs larger, rigorous trials before firm claims can be made. Read carefully, it is an invitation rather than a conclusion. For a woman who performs under pressure, in sport or in the boardroom, it suggests that the mental rehearsal and focus hypnosis cultivates may be a genuine edge, worth exploring with a qualified practitioner and a clear-eyed view of what is and is not yet proven.
