Where the Science on Sea-Based Therapy Stands
A 2024 review found the strongest evidence for sea-based therapy in psoriasis and fibromyalgia, with much still unproven.

This 2024 review gathered the research on thalassotherapy, the therapeutic use of seawater, marine air, sand and coastal climate, to take stock of where the evidence genuinely stands. It concluded that the firmest support so far is for psoriasis and for fibromyalgia, where several studies report improvements in symptoms and quality of life, while claims across many other conditions rest on thinner ground. The authors were candid that much of the field relies on small studies and that stronger trials are needed before broad promises can be made. Its value is in separating what the marine environment has some evidence for from what remains hopeful tradition. For a woman drawn to the restoring pull of the sea, it offers an honest map: real and worth exploring for certain conditions, and still an open question for many of the sweeping wellbeing claims made around it.
