Does a Week at a Spa Actually Lift Your Mood?

This early study followed adult patients through a one-week course of comprehensive spa treatment at a Czech spa, measuring their mood with an established questionnaire, the Profile of Mood States, at the start and again at the end. By the end of the week, mood had improved significantly: participants reported less anger and fatigue and greater vigour. Whether someone was in work or not shaped how they felt on arrival, while gender made no difference to the starting scores. The study is described by its own authors as preliminary, and it compared people only with their own earlier scores rather than against a group who did not attend, so it cannot separate the treatment itself from the effect of resting, stepping away from routine or simply expecting to feel better. Read that way, it offers a modest, honest signal that structured time at a spa may lift mood, and a starting point for the stronger controlled studies the field still needs.
