How Much Ordinary Room Light Costs You at Night

In 116 healthy adults, exposure to ordinary indoor room light in the hours before bed suppressed melatonin and shortened its duration by around 90 minutes compared with dim light, delaying its onset in 99% of participants.

Sleep

This study asked a very basic question that turns out to matter enormously: what does ordinary household lighting, not a screen, just the lamps and overhead lights most people leave on in the evening, actually do to the body's sleep hormone? Researchers had 116 healthy adults spend at least five days in a research centre, exposed either to typical room light or to dim light in the eight hours before their usual bedtime. Compared with dim light, ordinary room light suppressed melatonin production, delayed its onset in 99 percent of participants, and shortened the total duration of melatonin production by roughly 90 minutes. In a related experiment, exposure to room light during normal sleeping hours suppressed melatonin by more than half.

This was a controlled inpatient study rather than a study of people's actual homes, so it establishes what the light itself does under tightly managed conditions rather than measuring real-world habits directly. Its significance is in the threshold it reveals: the light levels tested were well within the range of a normally lit living room, not bright office lighting or daylight, meaning the everyday habit of leaving lights on through the evening is, by itself, working against the body's own signal to wind down.
