Pilates and Balance in Later Life
Just over half of the trials reviewed found Pilates meaningfully improved balance in older adults, with slightly stronger results for dynamic than static balance.
Pilates, Longevity
Falls and balance loss become a growing concern with age, and Pilates is frequently recommended as a low-impact way to build stability. This 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled fifteen intervention studies testing Pilates programmes in older adults. Just over half showed a statistically significant improvement in balance, with slightly stronger and more consistent results for dynamic balance, moving and shifting weight, than for static balance, standing still. The authors describe the overall evidence as promising but not yet conclusive, given mixed results across individual trials and variation in how each programme was delivered. For women thinking about fall prevention, this supports Pilates as a sensible addition to a broader movement routine, though it shouldn't be treated as a guaranteed fix on its own.
