Mapping the Science of How Space Shapes Us

A field-defining review sets out how design acts on body, mind, emotion and behaviour, and how tools like EEG and virtual reality now measure it.

This scoping review draws the map of neuroarchitecture, the young discipline that studies how the built environment affects us cognitively, emotionally and physiologically. It traces the field's roots in environmental psychology, gathers what is known, and sets out how researchers now measure our responses to space directly, through brain activity, heart-rate variability, skin response, eye-tracking and virtual-reality rooms that can be altered at will. Its honest through-line is that much of the work so far has been descriptive, and the field is still assembling the rigorous, repeatable studies that would let design decisions rest on firm evidence. As a review it organises and summarises rather than proving any single claim, which is precisely its use: it shows what we can and cannot yet say. For a woman who senses that her surroundings shape her energy and mood but wants to know how seriously to take that, it confirms the instinct is real, names the mechanisms, and marks honestly where the science is still being built.
