How the Brain Reads a Room

The brain appraises interiors along three hidden dimensions, coherence, fascination and a sense of home, through the networks that govern emotion.

This paper sits at the frontier the field calls neuroarchitecture, the study of how built space acts on the brain. Drawing together brain-imaging work, the authors show that our response to an interior is not vague taste but organised around three measurable qualities: coherence, how readable and ordered a space feels; fascination, how much it draws and holds attention; and hominess, how much it feels like somewhere you could belong. Each tracks activity in distinct parts of the visual brain, and all feed into the networks that handle emotion and the pull towards or away from a place. It is more a synthesis and a set of first experiments than a single definitive trial, so it maps the territory rather than settling every question. Its significance is in taking the feeling that a room is good for you and giving it a mechanism. For a woman designing spaces to think, rest or recover in, it offers a vocabulary: aim for order, interest and warmth, because the brain is quietly weighing all three.
