Does Lavender Really Calm Anxiety?
Across more than 100 trials, lavender reduced anxiety, with the strongest evidence for a standardised oral preparation.

This large review pooled over 100 randomised trials and 25 further studies, together involving more than 13,000 people, to test whether lavender in any form eases anxiety. Inhaled lavender aromatherapy, massage with lavender oil, and a standardised oral lavender capsule all reduced anxiety on validated scales, and the oral preparation carried the highest-quality evidence. A genuine difficulty runs through this field: a scent cannot be hidden from participants, so inhalation trials are hard to blind and expectation may colour the results, while many of the included studies were small or of modest quality. The signal for lavender is nonetheless one of the more consistent in aromatherapy research. For a woman reaching for lavender to steady her nerves before a demanding day, it offers reasonable evidence that it can take the edge off, with the firmest proof behind the standardised oral form.
