Which Kind of Exercise Improves Sleep Most
Across 86 trials and more than 7,000 people, several forms of exercise improved sleep quality, with a clear dose pattern rather than one type winning outright.

Exercise is one of the most reliable non-drug ways to sleep better, but until recently it was hard to say which kind, and how much, worked best. This network meta-analysis pooled 86 randomised controlled trials covering 7,276 participants and compared six approaches side by side: aerobic exercise, resistance training, the two combined, yoga, Pilates and traditional Chinese practices such as tai chi. All were assessed against everyday activity or usual care using standard sleep-quality measures. Rather than crowning a single winner, the analysis found that several modalities improved subjective sleep quality, and, importantly, mapped a dose-response relationship, meaning the amount of exercise mattered in a graded way rather than any single session type being magic. This is reassuring for real life: the best exercise for sleep is substantially the one a person will actually keep doing. Where the evidence stops: the trials varied considerably in quality, blinding is difficult in exercise research, and most outcomes were self-reported rather than measured by actigraphy or polysomnography, which tends to inflate apparent benefit. Taken with the wider evidence, the honest reading is that regular movement of almost any structured kind supports sleep, and consistency matters more than choosing the perfect discipline.
