Pilates for Metabolic Health in Prediabetic Women

A 16-week clinical Pilates programme significantly improved blood glucose control, cholesterol levels, core strength and balance in women with prediabetes.

Pilates, Women's Health

Prediabetes is a critical window for lifestyle intervention, and this randomised controlled trial tested whether a structured Pilates programme could help. Forty-two women with prediabetes were assigned to either 16 weeks of supervised clinical Pilates plus diabetes education, or education alone. The Pilates group showed significant improvements in blood glucose, insulin resistance and cholesterol levels, alongside gains in core strength, grip strength and balance. Participants also reported feeling more confident about exercise and fewer perceived barriers to doing it. As a single trial with a modest sample size, this counts as preliminary rather than definitive evidence, but it's a promising early signal that Pilates could play a genuine role in metabolic health, not just fitness or flexibility.
