What Long-Term Stress Does to the Body at a Cellular Level
Women under the greatest chronic stress showed cellular ageing corresponding to roughly a decade of extra years.

This study examined 58 healthy premenopausal women, most of them mothers caring for a chronically ill child, and measured telomeres, the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes that shorten as cells age. Women reporting the highest chronic stress had shorter telomeres, lower telomerase activity and higher oxidative stress, and within the caregiving group, more years of caregiving tracked with shorter telomeres. The gap between the most and least stressed corresponded to roughly a decade of additional cellular ageing. The sample is small and the design captures a single moment in time, so it cannot establish cause and effect, though the direction has since been replicated widely. It gave concrete, measurable form to something women often sense, that carrying a heavy load for years leaves a mark rest alone does not quickly undo.
