Does Breathwork Actually Lower Stress?
Across 12 trials, breathwork produced a small-to-moderate reduction in stress, and eased anxiety and low mood too.

This meta-analysis pooled twelve randomised trials, with 785 adults in total, to test whether deliberate breathing practices reduce stress compared with doing nothing or an active alternative. Breathwork produced a small-to-moderate reduction in self-reported stress, and the researchers also found improvements in symptoms of anxiety and depression. Most of the trials carried a moderate risk of bias and the practices varied, from slow breathing to more intensive techniques, so the certainty is real but not high. Breathwork's appeal is that it is free, portable and works through the body's own calming pathways, needing nothing but a few minutes and attention. For a woman looking for something to reach for when pressure builds, it offers reasonable evidence that structured breathing can take the edge off stress, best treated as a genuine tool rather than a cure-all.
