Bringing Nature Indoors, and Feeling Better for It

Workers gained the most in well-being from a nature-rich workplace when they already felt personally connected to nature.

This longitudinal study of white-collar workers in open-plan offices asked why, and for whom, indoor nature raises well-being. Across two waves of data, around 640 people in total, it found that bringing natural elements into the workspace, plants, daylight, natural materials and views, was linked to higher job and overall well-being, and that the effect was strongest in people who already feel a personal connection to nature. The mechanism it proposes is emotional: natural elements lift mood and ease the low-level strain of a busy shared office, and that carries through into how people feel about their work and their lives. As field research it shows association rather than proof, and well-being was self-reported, so it cannot promise a plant on the desk will undo depletion. Its value is in explaining the route: environment shapes emotion, and emotion shapes capacity. For a woman deciding where and how she works, it is a reminder that the room is not neutral, and that small natural touches earn their place.
