Can Aromatherapy Ease Low Mood?

About half of the trials reviewed found aromatherapy eased depressive symptoms, with massage more effective than inhalation.

Aromachology, Emotional Health, Depression, Holistic Wellbeing

This review gathered twelve randomised trials testing aromatherapy for depressive symptoms, delivered either by inhaling essential oils or through aromatherapy massage. Seven of the twelve reported an improvement in depression, and the effect was clearer when the oils were applied through massage than when simply inhaled, hinting that touch and relaxation may carry part of the benefit. The authors were candid that half the trials were of low quality and that methods varied widely, so this is a promising but unsettled picture. It is best read as a reason for cautious optimism, and not yet a treatment claim. For a woman whose mood has dipped, it suggests an aromatherapy massage may lift spirits as a gentle complement to proper care, while not standing in for treatment when depression is persistent.
