A Musty Smell at Home and the Sharpness of an Ageing Mind
Older adults reporting a musty smell at home had about a third higher odds of cognitive impairment.
Longevity, Lifestyle Medicine, Holistic Wellbeing
Drawing on 11,888 participants in a nationally representative Chinese longevity survey with a median age of 82, this study used self-reported musty odour as a proxy for hidden mould, on the reasoning that smell often detects growth the eye cannot see. After full adjustment for age, ventilation, fuel type, education, smoking, exercise and a range of health conditions, musty odour was associated with 34 percent higher odds of cognitive impairment on a standard mental state examination. The association held across every subgroup tested and survived several sensitivity analyses. The important caveat is that this is a snapshot, not a follow-up, so it cannot show which came first, and exposure was assessed by asking rather than measuring. The authors offer several candidate mechanisms, including disrupted sleep and inflammation, but none is established. Treat it as a reason to investigate a persistent musty smell, not a reason for alarm.
