The Everyday Symptoms People Blame on Everything Except Their Home
Across 36,541 adults, more signs of dampness at home meant more weekly fatigue, headache and mucous membrane symptoms.

This survey of 36,541 adults across six Chinese cities assessed seven separate signs of household dampness against the low-grade symptoms people rarely take to a doctor. Nearly fourteen percent reported weekly fatigue, three percent recurrent headache, and smaller proportions reported eye, throat, nasal and skin irritation. The associations followed a dose-response pattern, meaning the more indicators of dampness a home had, the more likely its occupants were to report symptoms. Condensation on window panes, damp bedding and humid air were among the most commonly reported signs, and hotter, more humid climates carried more of them. As a cross-sectional survey relying on self-reported exposure and symptoms, it cannot establish cause, and reporting bias is a genuine limitation. Its value is in the scale and in naming fatigue, the symptom most often attributed to workload or hormones, as something a building can contribute to.
