Can a Probiotic Supplement Rebalance Vaginal Bacteria After Menopause?

In a 28-day trial, a daily probiotic supplement improved vaginal health scores by 50% and reduced inflammatory markers substantially in 50 postmenopausal women, alongside a measurable increase in protective Lactobacillus.

Women's Health, Midlife

This clinical trial tested whether a daily oral probiotic — combining three specific bacterial strains — could support vaginal health in 50 postmenopausal women over 28 days. The results were encouraging: Vaginal Health Index scores improved by roughly 50%, inflammatory markers (including interleukin-6 and TNF-α) dropped substantially, and Lactobacillus abundance increased in vaginal samples, alongside a reduction in reported menopausal symptoms. Two things are worth knowing before reading this as a green light. First, the study had no placebo group, so some of the improvement could reflect natural fluctuation or expectation rather than the probiotic itself; the authors acknowledge this as a limitation for future research. Second, it was funded by the probiotic's manufacturer, which doesn't invalidate the data but is worth factoring in when weighing the strength of the claims. Taken together, it's a genuinely promising early signal for oral probiotics and postmenopausal vaginal health, best read as encouraging rather than conclusive.
