Can Pilates Improve Sleep Quality?

Across six randomised trials, Pilates significantly improved sleep quality scores, though the effect was not significant in a subgroup of healthy adults over 40.

Pilates, Sleep

Poor sleep is one of the most common complaints among midlife women, and Pilates is often suggested as a gentle way to help. This meta-analysis pooled six randomised trials with 477 participants, using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index to measure change. Overall, the Pilates group showed a significant improvement in sleep quality scores compared with non-exercising controls. Interestingly, when the researchers looked specifically at healthy adults over 40, the improvement was no longer statistically significant, a reminder that pooled results don't always hold for every age group. Pilates also made no measurable difference to reliance on sleep medication. The authors flagged high variability between the studies, so treat this as encouraging early evidence rather than a settled verdict, particularly for older or already-healthy sleepers.
