A Whole-of-Life Approach to Protecting the Ageing Brain

A two-year programme combining diet, exercise, brain training and health monitoring protected thinking skills in at-risk older adults.

This Finnish trial randomly assigned 1,260 older adults aged 60 to 77, all at raised risk of cognitive decline, either to a two-year programme combining a healthy diet, exercise, cognitive training, social activity and monitoring of blood pressure and other vascular factors, or to general health advice.

The group receiving the full programme did measurably better on tests of overall thinking, including processing speed and executive function, than the advice-only group. What makes it notable is that no single change carried the result; the pillars worked together, which is the core idea of lifestyle medicine.

The effect was modest and showed up on cognitive test scores, and the trial was not designed to measure dementia diagnoses directly, though a large United States trial reported similar benefits in 2025, which strengthens confidence.

For a woman thinking about protecting her memory and focus for the decades ahead, it suggests that several moderate habits combined can do more than any one alone.
