Does Mindfulness Meditation Actually Beat Other Ways to Improve Sleep?

Pooling 18 trials and over 1,600 participants, researchers found mindfulness meditation significantly improved sleep quality compared with generic control activities, but showed no advantage over established, specific sleep treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia.

Sleep

This meta-analysis asked a more precise question than 'does mindfulness help sleep': compared with what, exactly? Pooling 18 randomised trials covering over 1,600 people, the researchers separated comparisons into two types, mindfulness versus specific, evidence-based sleep treatments like CBT-I, and mindfulness versus nonspecific control activities designed just to control for attention and placebo effects. Against the specific, established treatments, mindfulness showed no meaningful advantage, essentially performing about the same. Against nonspecific controls, however, mindfulness meditation produced a real, moderate improvement in sleep quality, both immediately after training and at five-to-twelve-month follow-up.

Eighteen trials is a reasonable evidence base, but the authors rated overall confidence as low to moderate depending on the comparison, reflecting real variation in how the studies were designed and measured. The honest takeaway is nuanced rather than a simple yes or no: mindfulness meditation appears to be a genuinely useful tool for sleep, on par with doing something structured and attentive rather than nothing, but the evidence doesn't currently show it outperforms established, specific insomnia treatments where those are available.
