Historic and Present-Day Stress Linked to Vaginal Bacterial Balance

Among 70 American Indian women, high levels of lifetime trauma were associated with more than double the odds of having a low-Lactobacillus vaginal microbiota linked to bacterial vaginosis.

Stress Management, Women's Health

This study examined vaginal microbiota alongside detailed measures of psychosocial stress — including historic and intergenerational trauma — in 70 women from Northwestern Plains American Indian communities. Sixty-six percent of participants had a vaginal microbiota profile associated with bacterial vaginosis, and women reporting high levels of lifetime trauma had more than double the odds of this profile compared with those reporting less. The study is candid about its scope: with 70 participants from one community, findings can't be generalised broadly, and as a cross-sectional design, it captures association at a single point rather than change over time. What makes it valuable is its attention to a population and a form of stress — historic, cumulative, intergenerational — rarely examined in microbiome research, and its reminder that "psychosocial stress" isn't one uniform experience; its sources and depth matter to how the body responds.
