What Indoor Greenery Does to a Working Brain

Working and taking breaks in a planted office room eased stress and supported cognition, measured on the brain itself by EEG.

Stress Management, Sustainable Performance, Emotional Health

In this study, twenty-seven healthy office workers spent time working and taking breaks in rooms furnished with indoor greenery, one in a Japanese style and one tropical, against a plant-free control room, while researchers tracked their stress, emotions and cognitive performance, including brain activity by EEG. The planted rooms were associated with calmer, more positive emotional states and better performance on cognitive tasks than the bare room, echoing two long-standing ideas: that nature restores tired attention, and that it works partly by shifting emotion before thought. It is a small, short study in a controlled setting, so it points to a real effect rather than settling its size, and personal taste in the design mattered to how strong the benefit was. Its worth is in showing the effect at the level of the body, not just the questionnaire. For a woman shaping a room she works or recovers in, it suggests that living greenery is not decoration alone; it is quietly doing something for mind and mood.
